Pokesdown Community Primary School, Bournemouth

Pokesdown Community Primary School, Bournemouth

Client: Pokesdown Community Primary School

Background: The school had historical water ingress issues throughout the building, that far outweighed just the roofing areas, these were deemed to be a mixture of design issues and poor workmanship leading to the requirement of a full roof replacement.

Scope Of Service: Design, supply & install single ply waterproofing system upon successful removal of the existing failed Kalzip system, upon arrival to site other items of work arose in the form of curtain walling, carpentry, painting & decorating and other internal finishes.

Form Of Contract: Purchasing Contract

Contract On Site: 10 Weeks

TSL received the invitation to tender for this opportunity via the LHC framework as we’ re one of Langley preferred contracting partners on this framework, the tender was issued via Kier Workplace Services acting as a consultant and upon a successful tendering process, we were awarded the contract to start immediately. Due to the nature of the roofing issues and the longstanding ingress the school had succumbed to, it was evident a quick resolution was a priority and as such a pre-start meeting held with TSL, Kier & the school was undertaken to explore the options of undertaking the works in term time with minimal disruption to the day to day running of the building.

After gathering an understanding as to the location within the building and dates of the upcoming SAT exam, including revision timetables for quiet periods. TSL began to produce a detailed logistics & phased programming schedule for the day to day installation on the project to ensure that minimal disruption was present for the kids and the upmost respect was afforded to not only their learning but the importance of their exams. Due to TSL being fully licensed on behalf of the competent roofer government backed licensing scheme, we were also able to manage the refurbishment works throughout including signing of the roof with building control. Giving our client complete peace of mind that all regulations have been met in their upgraded wall & roof system with all guarantees being handled by the single contractor.

The project went exceptionally well given the circumstances and nature of the works, so much so that we were issued with a glowing recommendation by the client in the form of a letter that was issued to us upon completion as well as our site manager receiving a small gift voucher on behalf of the children for his efforts in teaching the children about construction in per-scheduled interaction mornings scheduled in via the school to assist in their learning. Small snippet of the endorsement issued to us as follows: “In conclusion we would totally recommend TSL to other schools considering a roof replacement. As mentioned before we are on a very tight site and to have massive building works take place in the school term would have been a huge nightmare – however, it was an incredibly smooth operation, 440 children coped amazingly well with a much-decreased playground, and the disruption to the school was kept to an absolute minimum.”

We completed this project during lockdown 1.0 and we thoroughly enjoyed what is typically a complicated project due to the curved nature of the existing substrate and subsequent panels.
