Syon Park
Small WorksBackground
TSL was appointed to replace a deteriorating green roof at the Hilton Syon Park hotel which was experiencing water ingress in multiple areas. Comprehensive refurbishment was required to restore the waterproof integrity of the roof and improve the safety systems in place.
Scope of Service
The initial project scope included removal of the existing green roof and inverted roof finishes and replacement with a new liquid-applied system, followed by reinstatement of the inverted roof terrace paving.
Our site inspection revealed that the existing mansafe system was non-compliant and also required replacement. We installed a new weighted key clamp handrail system, along with an additional mansafe system on a separate section of the roof.
Environmental Considerations
With a significant amount of soil and plant waste to remove we instructed an award-winning specialist waste management company, who were able to test and certificate the soil allowing its re-distribution.
Old roof materials were responsibly removed and disposed of or, where possible, re-used. Some of the insulation was in a reusable condition so this was utilised to reduce the waste generated. The concrete paving slabs were thoroughly cleaned and reused where possible.

Challenges and Solutions
The congested roof layout with numerous rooflights, vents, and plant areas, created a tight working area with limited material storage space. Our phased installation plan, coupled with efficient procurement, enabled us to call off materials and complete sections without losing what little storage space we had or incurring increased cost. To enable this plan and further reduce disruption to the hotel we selected Westwood’s Wecryl PMMA fast curing liquid system.
The terraced section opened out from a bar, whose facilities were within the compound of our site. Specialist handover procedures were developed at the end of working days and weekends to ensure they and their guests were safe and our works were not disrupted.
Client Summary
Syon Park is a busy hotel with frequent functions and events, including weddings. We maintained consistent and transparent communication with the hotel project team, re-sequencing and even halting works to accommodate these events. We issued a weekly look-ahead report detailing upcoming works and any anticipated disruptions and, where unexpected noise issues arose, works were immediately paused and relocated or rescheduled. To maintain guest comfort, we applied privacy film to the main foyer glazing. This proactive approach enabled the hotel and independent bar to remain fully operational throughout, including use of guest rooms and conference facilities.
Our collaborative and solution-focused approach also enabled us to work alongside the additional works taking place in the building, which did not fall under our HSE, without compromising quality or safety.
