TSL were invited to provide an independent proposal for the roof refurbishment of a manufacturing premises in Portsmouth. By understanding the existing roof condition and internal logistics, TSL were able to provide a long-term solution for the roof refurbishment which offered minimal impact to the day to day running’s.

Manufacturing facilities offer a unique product into a critical environment and as such would be financially detrimental if operations were halted at any point. TSL had to accommodate and incorporate this into the refurbishment works. Facilities had fortnightly shut downs which enabled TSL to complete all internal works and glazing replacements were completed when the areas were vacated.
While the existing roofing system is considered fragile and dangerous due to its asbestos content, TSL managed this risk as part of the refurbishment proposal. Through encapsulating the existing system, building exposure was eliminated while roof refurbishment works could continue in conjunction with operations internally. The works consisted of a hybrid system of spacer bar, with mineral wool insulation and single skin sheet as well as a composite insulated panel with translucent poloycarbonate roof light sheets.
This posed a particular difficult challenge due to the requirement to removed the existing Georgian wire glass roof lights whilst the floor remained live. A safe, segregated system of works was introduced to accomplish a speed and clean replacement while having minimum disruption to the floor.
To appropriately manage the risk of airborne asbestos, TSL employed specialist air monitoring technicians which ensured the safety of building occupants was paramount. Through monitoring the air content before, during and after works TSL could manage the works appropriately and continue to reassure building occupants.
Paramount to the roof refurbishment programme was TSL’s non-working management. Their full-time capacity on site allowed communication between operatives at roof level, internal occupants and manufacturing management to be efficient and free flowing, ensuring that any and all issues were raised and addressed in the first instance.
